Giant Cat Sculpture Installed in Calistoga

On October 6, 2011, a 14 foot high steel sculpture by Sean McGinn Smith (1959-2010) was installed at Vineyard 511 on Diamond Mountain in Calistoga.

Sean was a painter and metalworker who worked at the Linden Street Warehouse in the studio of his mother, Kalani Engles. Raised in Woodside, California, Sean studied archeology at the University of Arizona and graduated from the Art Institute of San Francisco. Many of his works embody the form and image of cats, inspired by his beloved Abyssinian, Simba.

One of his largest “Simba’s”, a 14 foot high steel sculpture, was purchased from his estate by Ed and Irene Ojdana, the owners of Vineyard 511. Below are photos of the sculpture being installed with the assistance of Sean’s brother, Tim Smith.

Restoration

Because the sculpture had been long exposed to elements, the original painted finish was showing signs of wear. The buyers decided to have it sandblasted, zinc coated and powder coated in its original colors to enable it to stand up to the elements indefinitely. They selected Precision Powder Coating in Belmont for the job and commissioned Linden Street Warehouse artist Laura Diamondstone, to restore the silver highlights on the decorative icons which cover the cat’s tail, body and double pedestal.

Two Linden Street Artists Selected for Portola Valley Cultural Arts Committee Show

Kalani Engles and Bonny Novesky have been invited to participate in the inaugural Portola Valley Cultural Committee exhibition at the Kriewall-Haehl Gallery at Woodside Priory from October 3rd to November 5th, 2011.

Two of Kalani’s large oils on canvas (see below) and three of Bonny’s acrylic prints will be on display. Seven other Portola Valley artists will also be featured in the show.

An Artists' Reception from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Saturday, October 15th will feature local wine and hors d'oeuvres accompanied by music performed by Portola Valley musicians Angela Schillace and Kari Rust.

Silicon Valley Open Studios May 7 & 8

Seven Linden Street Warehouse artists will open their studios to the public during Silicon Valley Open Studios on May 7 & 8. Paintings, sculpture, prints, photography and textiles will be on display from 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM each day.

Visitors will be able to learn firsthand from the artists how their work is created and have an opportunity to choose from a wide selection of fine pieces should they wish to buy. Light refreshments will be served.

The Linden Street Warehouse is located at 275 B Linden Street, directly behind the mattress store on El Camino Real across from Target, Redwood City.

Kalani Engles One Woman Show

In February 2011 The Studio Shop in Burlingame presented over 30 of Kalani’s works in an ambitious one woman show. Both showrooms of the gallery were dedicated to her work for the month.

The exhibition featured large and small oils on canvas, color and black and white monotypes and a painted steel sculpture, including many pieces never seen before.

The gallery also published a beautiful 40 page exhibition catalog which can be viewed online at Blurb.

Bonny Novesky and Joyce Savre are currently showing their artwork at Heatherfields in Saratoga, CA - along with former Linden Street artist Marianne Lettieri! The opening last night was a huge success and fellow artist Kalani Engles was there to lend her support and enjoy the festivities.

Heatherfields is a special boutique with a focus on art, in the quaint village of Saratoga. Owner Patrice Davis is an interior designer and provided a lovely salon setting to showcase the works of these three artists.

Joyce Savre in Several Shows and a Collaboration

The lovely gardens at Filoli

Joyce Savre was in a show at Filoli in Woodside, California, called Patterns and Abstractions of Nature, A Fine Art Mixed Media Exhibit. Her piece was a triptych titled "Shadow Lines, Ocean Space". This lovely exhibit featured original fine art drawings, paintings, photographs and other two-dimensional art that illuminate the amazing structures of nature in creative ways. The subjects ranged from something living, such as the veins of leaves, to something not living, such as ripples on sand dunes, to a combination, such as the patterns of reeds and the ripples on a pond. The exhibit ran from February 9 - April 11, 2010.

What's 'Summer' Without a Walleye, Jasper John?

This piece above is Joyce Savre's entry from last year's exhibit. We are happy to announce that Joyce has been invited once again to the 51st Midwestern Invitational Exhibit of Fine Art at the Roarke Art Museum in Moorhead, Minnesota. This year's theme will be "Birthright and Legacy" and is being held June 18 - September 5, 2010.

Triton Museum

Joyce's piece, "The Fallen Bird", was one of 70 works out of 600, selected for the prestigious Statewide Drawing and Print Competition, juried by Roberta Loach. This exhibit was held at the Triton Museum in Santa Clara, and ran from December 12, 2009 - March 14, 2010.

Last but definitely not least, Joyce has recently collaborated with the poet, Charlotte Muse. Joyce wrote music for one of Charlotte's poems entitled "Caldeando Song". The sheet music is in Charlotte's new book of poetry called A Story Also Grows, which was inspired by the words of Ascencion Solorsano, the last native speaker of the Amah Mutsun tribe of northern California. This lovely book is printed from hand set Kennerley Oldstyle type on the first cotton/linen handmade rag paper from the Chester Creek paper mill. The book is available for purchase here.

Eight Linden Street Warehouse Artists in March Show

Eight Artists from the Linden Street Warehouse were featured in a group show at Little House, Menlo Park, California, during the month of March. These artists shared representative pieces of their work in this group show.

This exhibit showcases a variety of artist visions, styles, processes, and materials. Housed in a large space, are eleven individual art studios, each inhabited by an artist manifesting their own creativity. We present here the Paintings of Jeff Brown, the Monotype prints of Kalani Engles, a Painted Mural piece by Lisa Kindley, a Mixed Media sculpture by Marianne Lettieri. Book Arts by Barbara Mortkowitz, a Multi-layered Painting by Bonny Novesky, Collage Painting Compositions by Joyce Savre, and Encaustic and Collage pieces by Lia Schnipper.

A woman who has collected my art for years recently got divorced from her second husband. Among the sources of incompatibility in their marriage was the fact that he didn’t like my art (or any art for that matter). Whenever she hung a piece of mine, he would complain about it for a while and then take it down. His job, however, required him to be out of town for extended periods. Whenever he was gone, she would hang my art again in the same place it was before. When he returned, he would again take it down. This went on for a couple of years until this and other conflicts convinced her to leave him.

It was not an amicable parting, but they were able to agree on a property settlement – with one exception. He insisted on keeping a large oil painting of mine, Searsville, that she had acquired while they were married. He claimed it had been purchased with community funds, and that the room where it (occasionally) hung would not be the same without it. No amount of argument would change his mind, and she eventually relinquished the painting. Did he experience an epiphany and suddenly fall in love with my work, or was this just his final shot in the war of the walls? Take a look at Searsville (48” x 60”) and decide for yourself.

One of the biggest obstacles an artist faces in selling a painting is getting both partners in a marriage to agree to buy it. The husband loves it, but the wife thinks it’s too big, too bright, or too scary. For eight years a man in North Carolina who loves my work could not get his wife to put it in their house. Then one day her best friend from New York is visiting and says she knows about my work and loves it. Suddenly, the wife sees everything differently and now has two of my large paintings hanging in her living room (including Lockwood Folly 1). Did she really not like my work, was she trying to stand up to her husband, or did she just need reassurance that she was doing the right thing. Who knows?

Ido Agassi and Even Hoshen Press of Ra'anana, Israel are currently exhibiting their fine art books in the display cases at GTU.

Ido Agassi is a master bookbinder, printer and publisher, who in an age of mass production, has returned bookmaking to a genuine craft and fine art form. His handcrafted, limited and numbered editions transform classic and Hebrew literature into works of art.

From their letterpress and intaglio publishing house in Ra'anana, Ido and his father Uzi Agassi craft their fine art books, which have been purchased by libraries, museums, galleries and private collectors throughout the world.

Barbara Mortkowitz, curator of the exhibition says, "It's quite an honor to be able to exhibit the work of Ido Agassi and Even Hoshen Press at the Graduate Theological Union." Mortkowitz who first met Agassi at the Codez International Book Fair in 2007, has curated several shows of their work, most recently at the Mechanics Library in San Francisco as well as the Jewish Community Library.

Studio Show Update

One of our studio mates recently moved to Switzerland so we sent her a brief update on the show... thought we'd share with you, too!

Well, the artists all pulled together and made a real production of it - great presentation. The Shriners Trolley shuttled people from downtown Redwood City to the warehouse every half hour. Charles and Joyce's husband, Jim, tended bar in Joyce's old studio. She recently moved into Stephen's space, and a semi-retired doctor, Jeff Brown, took over hers. (He was out of town and let us use his studio for the bar). All in all, we had a lot of traffic and it was great fun meeting new people and "talking shop". It went so well, we're going to do this every year!

Linden Street Warehouse Artists Show

Twelve visual artists who share a fabulous warehouse space are opening their doors to the public for a two-day art show. Join us for a reception on Saturday, Sept. 12 from 6-9pm and Sunday, Sept. 13 from 11am - 4pm.

The festive Shriner's Trolley will transport visitors to and from the studio and the downtown Redwood City Art Walk on Saturday night.

Participating artists: Maryalice Bowie, Kalani Engles, Lisa Kindley, Marianne Lettieri, Kent Manske, Barbara Mortkowitz, Bonny Novesky, Joyce Savre, Lia Schnipper, Sean McGinn Smith, Jamie Watson, and Nanette Wylde.

Kalani Engles has been a professional artist for 30 years. She is represented by galleries in California and New York, and her work is owned by museums, corporations and collectors nationwide. She will display a range of work in both abstract and representational styles.

Joyce Savre incorporates a love of language and the written word in her mixed media collage pieces. Some of her most recent work from the "Handwritten: Circles" series will be presented.

Bonny Novesky creates large collages with intricately complex layers of rich, painted glazes in earth and mineral colors. She also designs jewelry using the gemstones and antique centerpieces she collects from around the world, such as fossilized mammoth tusk, carved jade, and Tibetan bells.

Kent Manske and Nanette Wylde of PreNeo Press will be showing works on paper, artists' books and Meaning Makers, a collaborative project that plays with aspects of contemporary cultural production.

Marianne Lettieri builds narrative constructions out of found objects and the castoff detritus of our consumer society. Her studio, which houses a bizarre and whimsical collection of vintage artifacts and materials, will be open to the public.

Sean McGinn Smith designs and fabricates custom metal furniture and creates sculptures influenced by his studies of pre-Columbian cultures of the Americas. He is interested in the concept of the magical world just beyond the edge of consciousness.

Others artists who will have work on display at the warehouse include book artist Barbara Mortkowitz, printmaker Maryalice Bowie, decorative artist and muralist Lisa Kindley, collage artist Lia Schnipper, and Jamie Watson, the artist behind CocoBohemia, an Internet-based surfing and lifestyle shop.

Kalani Engles Honored at SBAWCA

Kalani Engles was honored as a Charter Member of the South Bay Area Women's Caucus for Art at the opening reception for SBAWCA's 20th Anniversary Exhibition at the Art Object Gallery in San Jose on August 29th.

Polyglot: A book that contains the same text in more than one language.

Gualala Arts will present an exhibit titled "Polyglot: Expressive Media in Book Arts" from the opening June 13 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. through July 5 in the Jacob Foyer. This invitation-only exhibition of more than 50 books will feature contemporary works by artists using multiple media such as glass, fabrics, metals, wood and clay.

Artists' books are works of art realized in the form of a book. AAF NYC is a place for new and established collectors to discover and buy paintings, drawings, sculptures, video, photography and limited edition prints from distinguished galleries, all priced from $100 - $10,000.

Marianne Lettieri has two mixed media pieces in "Under the Influence: works by contemporary collage and assemblage artists and homage to those 20th century artists who inspire them," an exhibition at the Longview Museum of Fine Arts in Longview, Texas, March 14-April 25, 2009.

A 96-page catalog of the show is available here . The catalog was written by Cecil Touchon, director of the International Museum of Collage, Assemblage and Construction, who curated the exhibition. Marianne created a tribute to Hannalore Baron who has influenced her artistic development, and a second work more typical of her own style.

Marking Time: Omer Calendars by Community Artists

Omer counters, or calendars, have been part of the tradition of hiddur mitzvah, or beautification of the commandment, for centuries. Modern examples demonstrate how a wide variety of contemporary materials and techniques can be used to create pieces which reflect both ancient and new ideas about time and spiritual values.

The Omer is the measure of grain which the Children of Israel were commanded to bring to the Temple from the second day of Passover until Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks, a period lasting 49 days. The counting of these days is an important part of the commandment. Over time, tradition began to link this period with the transition from slavery to freedom, and it was considered a time of preparation for the receiving of the Torah as celebrated on Shavuot. Contemporary artists have incorporated all these ideas into their own personal expressions of the significance of counting the Omer.

Barbara Mortkowitz is currently involved with organizing events for Ido Agassi. Ido is a master bookbinder, printer and publisher who has returned bookmaking to a genuine craft and fine art form. Ido Agassi's handcrafted, limited and numbered editions transform classic and Hebrew literature into works of art. With use of distinctive typography, calligraphy, original prints, aquatints, and etchings, Ido Agassi employs a host of techniques to illuminate the texts on highest qualities of papers.

The pages are sewn by hand and encased in a variety of whimsical bindings, boxes, and slipcases to literally create worlds in miniature. For example, the story of David versus Goliath is bound by a leather slingshot (stone included) and the poem "Mein Blaus Klavier" ("My Blue Piano") written by Else Lasker-Schuler, is imprinted on the paper keys of a book-sized cloth grand piano.

These handcrafted, limited editions transform classic and contemporary Hebrew literature into works of art. Calligraphy, original etchings and prints illuminate texts on high quality papers which are sewn by hand and encased in whimsical bindings and boxes.

These books have never before been in the United States until Barbara Mortkowitz brought them for this rare exhibition. They are in the display cases on the second and third floors.

Bio
Nanette Wylde is a California native who grew up in San Jose. She has lived in many different places, but always returns to the Bay Area because she needs to see the Santa Clara Range from her front yard. She makes her home in Redwood City where she resides with one spousal unit, one amazing cat, an abundant vegetable garden and many fruit trees. She is Associate Professor of Art & Art History at California State University, Chico.

Statement
My work starts with a question. Some unanswered phenomenon will go nagging around my gray matter, repeating itself in hushed, slightly obsessive tones until I satisfy with research–extensive research. And then a response. While it is the research that points me to answers, it is the actual making of the work, completing the project that satisfies the question.

My interests include: language, personality, difference, beliefs, systems, ideas, movement, reflection, identity, perceptions, structures, stories, socialization, definitions, context, memory, experience, change, and residue. These manifest in the creation of socially reflective, language based works, generally of hybrid media.

Barbara Mortkowitz in 2 book art shows

Bay Area artist Barbara Mortkowitz is currently in 2 book art shows, with one of her art books in each show.

The first is BookWorks 2008 which runs until September 26 at the Downtown San Francisco Library. This is the 14th in a series of exhibitions with works by members of the Pacific Center for the Book Arts.

Ordinarily, one thinks of a book as a gathering of pages bound between two covers. But to others, a book can take many forms and become a work of art, and the pieces in this show represent a wide range of responses to this question. What you see here may surprise you and even challenge your definition of what constitutes a book. Traditional books, such as finely-printed books of poetry and other literature and books beautifully hand-bound in various materials, will of course be offered, and along with these will be innovative, and often whimsical, avant-garde artists’ books.

This exhibit features the fiber art books by members of the Bay Area Book Artists (BABA). BABA is a group of independent artists bound together by a passion for the book arts.

3 Linden Street Warehouse artists involved in book project

For generations women in the Bible have inspired movies, novels, sermons, and art. The new book, Women of the Bible: Mothers, Harlots, Wives and Queens, retells the stories of these female archetypes through creative explorations in art, prose and poetry. Three of our Linden Street Warehouse artists – Marianne Lettieri, Barbara Mortkowitz, and Joyce Savre, participated in the collaboration.

Conceptually Bound 3

Conceptually Bound 3 is an exhibition of Artists’ Books, curated by Nanette Wylde, featuring the work of 30 artists.

It opens with a reception & panel discussion on Friday, April 11, 2008, 6-8 pm. Runs through May 25 at The Mohr Gallery, CSMA, Mountain View, CA. Directions here.

Throughout recorded history, books have been containers documenting and transmitting human culture. It is no wonder that contemporary artists have taken their cultural production into book form, and as is the practice of art makers, pushing the concept of what defines a book beyond conventions and mainstream notions.

“The theme of Conceptually Bound refers to the idea that the content of the book is in part expressed by the form the book takes,” says curator Nanette Wylde, a former CSMA faculty member and currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at CA State University, Chico. “The books in the exhibition reference the individual context of what is meaningful in the artists’ lives and many reflect concerns of the broader culture.”

Monotype artist Jamie Watson, sat down with photographer Jay Watson, to answer a few questions about her work and influences.

Where were you born and where did you grow up? I was born in San Jose, CA. My father was a pilot in the Navy, so I lived in about 8 different states for only a couple of years at a time, such as Washington state & Michigan. Then, my dad got a job with Delta and was based out of New Orleans, so the longest I lived in one place was in Louisiana, from 5th grade to high school graduation.

Even though you grew up in Louisiana, you seem to identify more as being a Californian. How does this connection to California influence your work? Well I think that it makes me feel rather carefree and open, with a lot of California colors. It has also influenced my passion for surfing and introduced surf themes in my prints. However I was on a trip to New Orleans the year before Katrina. And all of these senses awakened that I had forgotten about when I moved. Now I long to use deeper, more saturated colors, with heavier markings as a result of that trip. Although I haven’t done it yet, it is filed and available when I’m ready!

This could be a mash up answer of artists, film makers, writers, or musicians. Who are some artists that influence your work? That’s a fun question, which I have never thought about before. I feel influenced and inspired by the independent spirit and greatness of certain artists out there such as Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Ani DiFranco, Pete Seeger, The Mother Hips, Jack Johnson, Bob Welsh Jr.…some of these for not just what they put out, but the way they live. Frederic Remington, Flora Bowley, Kate Farrall, my husband Jay Watson, Wes Anderson, PT Anderson, Jared Hess, Daniel Day Lewis, Sofia Coppola, Bruce Brown…There are too many. I am also just as inspired by friends & family, surfers, bloggers and people like Coach John Wooden, Gabrielle Reece and Fred Rogers.

Fred Rogers, I wasn't expecting that. Well he was just such a kind soul who did so much good for children and television, and his ways of talking about issues and feelings on his show were very original and unique! Of the people that rotate through my brain a lot, he is often there. I found a special book written about him, and wrote about it in this entry.

Many people do not understand the monotype process. Can you briefly explain how your work is made through this process? Sure. I start out with oil-based inks and mix colors that I want to use for the day. I paint an image on plexiglass, typically using a brush and a brayer. I then place the glass face up on the bed of the press, lay the paper on top of the glass and roll it through the press. The intense pressure applies the image to the paper in reverse.

Collectors must really appreciate that each piece is a one of a kind original. How have you been making your art more accessible to new collectors and new art buyers? Yes, I think collectors do like that about monotypes. I get to hear a lot of feedback when I participate in Open Studios, so that is great. I have been making my art more accessible by writing a blog (though it’s not always about art), participating in Open Studios and having a website. My big goals for this year are working on getting my prints on Etsy and to have gallery shows in surf towns, with my surf themed work.

Ironically you have not put much of your work up on your blog, but you post frequently and you receive a good amount of traffic. Any plans you would like to share with us for your blog? I find that my blog is a creative endeavor, which is very fulfilling. I am rather surprised myself, that I have not included a lot of art in it. I am sure that will come with time. I like to write about a lot of miscellaneous things and give myself projects, such as my current one of photographing cars in my neighborhood. I also have a new feature called “Surf Fridays!” which you might be able to guess, will be something about surfing every Friday. My future plans are to include interviews of people, including artists.

It sounds as though you have been building a good network of artists through the blogosphere and the internet. Do you have any tips, experiences, or feedback you would like to share about this experience? I have met a few really cool artists via the blogosphere and that is a real treat. It’s almost like having a pen pal when you were a kid. It just keeps the inspiration going. I would recommend visiting blogs you like and leaving a comment here and there. It’s a very friendly and engaging atmosphere, I’ve come to find. Interestingly enough, it has sparked an interest in me to become a collector and I’ve been buying other artists’ work by finding them on the internet.

You’re also interested in street art. Have you planned any new guerilla tactics for your work? Will we see your monotype press next to a brick wall soon? Yes! The first one I did was in New York in November. My next plan is to leave artwork in San Francisco, sometime this Spring. I like to take a photo of where I’ve left it, and put it on my blog because I think it’s a fun thing to share. Each time I go on a trip, I will bring something to leave behind. Eventually I want to leave art all around the world. That would be nice.

Solo show for Marianne Lettieri

Marianne Lettieri has a solo show of new work at The Main Gallery in Redwood City, March 19 to April 20, 2008. The exhibit, called "Outside Inside," shakes up the concepts of freedom and confinement, suggesting that they might be the same. Cages, lanterns and paintings of sky are juxtaposed with familiar objects to create unsettling tension. The viewer will have to question what is outside and what is inside.

"For years I have collected a great inventory of interesting containers to use in my art," Marianne said. "The challenge for me with this series was to work with enclosures that have strong symbolic imagery, but say something unexpected."

The resulting exhibit offers thought provoking and ironic visual metaphor. For example, a red birdcage appears as if it would fly off into the blue canvas behind, if it were not tethered to a chain and barbell. A house shaped sculpture painted with clouds and encased in a wrought iron cloche gives new meaning to the phrase "castle in the sky." These and other pieces in "Outside Inside" reveal what is normally concealed by the placement of objects in such a way that poetic resonance happens.

There will be a reception for the artist on Sunday, March 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. The gallery is located at 1018 Main Street in the historic yellow Victorian cottage. The Main Gallery is open Wednesday through Friday from 11 to 4 and weekends from 10 to 3. Even Hoshen private press in Ra'anana, Israel represents a collaboration of father and son Uzi and Ido Agassi. Named after the twelve precious stones of Aaron's breastplate, the press produces books in limited editions, accompanied by original etchings, prints, or woodcuts, with special hand made bindings. Book artist and designer Ido Agassi will be present at the opening reception on January 13, giving an artist's talk at 3 pm. This exhibit represents the first time the press's work is being displayed in the United States.

The Qi Project by Nanette Wylde

The Qi Project by Nanette Wylde opens at KCI Art Gallery.

The Qi Project, an installation which investigates humanity, opens at The Krause Center for Innovation Art Gallery at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, Tuesday, February 5th. The exhibition runs through February 29.

The Qi Project is an inquiry into the nature of humanity and what it means to be human at this moment in time. It is the gallery's first projected video installation. Project creator, Nanette Wylde interviewed people in front of a camcorder, via postcard, email, website and telephone. The questions asked were "What does it mean to be human?" and "What is humanity?"

The Qi Project was conceived in 2005 after nine weeks of study and travel in China. The project was conceptualized specifically for the KCI Gallery and its unique circular aspects.

The Qi Project brings together nine years of video people watching, interviews in both written and video form, and welcomes audience participation in the gallery. There is a companion website http://qiproject.net

Artist’s Statement

I grew up within sight of the missile gantries at Cape Canaveral, Florida during the race to the moon between the US and USSR. Visual juxtapositions, such as rosette spoonbills flying at the rumble of a rocket launch, created for me a lasting appreciation of images that are at once familiar and unsettling. Connecting disparate elements so that we see things in a new way is central to my art. I enjoy collecting and using in my work vintage objects and ephemera that tell stories of who we are how we have lived. Transforming forgotten castoffs and ordinary detritus into meaningful imagery is for me a personal statement of faith.

Biography

Marianne Lettieri received a BFA from University of Florida in 1971 with majors in printmaking, drawing and dance. She worked as a graphic artist and modern dancer prior to a career in creative marketing and communications in the high technology industry of Northern California. She now works full time as an artist in assemblage, collage and mixed media, and conducts art workshops in the Bay Area. She exhibits at The Main Gallery in Redwood City, and is the founder of Arts of the Covenant, a Christian art organization.
